How do I know the inside scoop on the elevator industry?
Well, I have had multiple positions at 2 of the big 4 elevator companies. I have inside knowledge about how the large elevator companies make their money. Why is that important? I know, for example, that companies will charge as much as 70%+ in margin (almost 250% markup) for repairs and product upgrades they sell, but as low as 25% margin for the same exact product depending on the situation!
I also know that back in the 1980’s and 1990’s each mechanic would have 50-75 units on their routes. Now some companies have mechanics with 200+ units on their route! Are you still getting the same preventive maintenance you used to? Your elevator company will tell you that newer elevator’s don’t need as much maintenance because they run on microprocessors now. While that is partially true, the door equipment still needs just as much loving!
